MILITARY MORAL INJURY

Something you did downrange still bother you? You May Be Living With Military or Combat-Related Moral Injury.

Warrior Camp® has helped combat veterans heal the invisible wounds of combat-related moral injury — completely free of charge.

What Is Military Moral Injury?

Military or combat-related moral injury isn’t the same as or a part of PTSD — though it’s often mistaken for it. While PTSD is characterized by a massive upheaval in the nervous system, causing hyperarousal, irritability, flashbacks, and other physiologic symptoms, combat-related moral injury is a spiritual and/or existential wound. It is a wound to the soul. It is the consequence of having a conscience.

Here is the main difference:

PTSD is about what HAPPENED to a veteran.
Moral Injury is about what the veteran DID during combat operations.

Here is what some combat vets say:
“Killing each other (another) defies the logic of our existence.”
“We’re all haunted by what we did outside the wire, or didn’t do.”
“Surviving is my punishment for what I did.”
That weight doesn’t go away on its own. But it can be healed.

You May Have Combat-Related Moral Injury if:

  • You feel like you have sinned
  • You feel that you violated a personal or spiritual value
  • You feel that you are defiled
  • You feel that you need to be punished for what you did
  • You feel that you deserve to die for what you did
  • You believe that you don’t deserve to heal or ever be happy

You're Not Broken. You're Morally Injured.

Veterans struggling with combat-related moral injury are often told they have PTSD, even when that doesn’t fit with how they feel.

Moral injury is the mark left by a conscience that was working exactly as it should — a conscience that is deeply conflicted about what one did downrange while completing a mission. This comes up later – upon further reflection and with the passage of time. It’s not a flaw. It’s the character of someone who took their service seriously.

Warrior Camp® was built specifically for combat veterans carrying this kind of weight. Our program doesn’t paper over the past — it helps you make sense of it.

How Warrior Camp® Heals Military Moral Injury

Warrior Camp® is a residential, intensive retreat designed exclusively for combat veterans. Unlike outpatient programs or group therapy alone, Warrior Camp provides an immersive, structured healing environment — at no cost to you.

What Makes Warrior Camp® Different

EMDR Therapy for Moral Injury Repair
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the most widely-used evidence-based treatments for trauma. At Warrior Camp, EMDR is specifically adapted to address the moral dimensions of combat experiences — guilt, betrayal, and shame — not just the fear response of PTSD.

Psychotherapy Incorporating Horses
Horses are uniquely sensitive to emotional states. Working with a herd of horses each day -as a group- helps veterans rebuild what was lost after service (or after redeployment) – the unit cohesion that kept them alive.

Many veterans describe equine therapy as the first time they felt truly seen since leaving service – from watching how the horses accept them, despite what they did, and how they are powerful, sentient beings who interact in a non-predatory way.

Peer Community of Combat Veterans
At Warrior Camp, you’re surrounded by people who understand without explanation — fellow combat veterans who’ve faced similar defining moments. This shared context accelerates healing in ways that most programs simply can’t replicate.

Individualized Treatment Planning
No two veterans carry the same moral injury. Your Warrior Camp experience is built around your specific history, your values, and what you need in order to find a way forward.

Spiritual & Meaning-Making Support
Moral injury is often a crisis of meaning. Whether or not you hold religious beliefs, Warrior Camp helps you rebuild a coherent narrative about your service — one that allows you to carry the past without being crushed by it.

A: Warrior Camp® is a private program that operates independently of the VA. You can participate in both — they are not mutually exclusive. Warrior Camp provides an intensive, residential, retreat experience that most VA programs cannot offer.

A: 7 days which includes travel days on each end.

A: Warrior Camp® serves combat veterans of all eras, without regard to discharge status.

  • We require a DD214 documenting forward deployment;
  • We require a conversation with the veteran’s treatment provider if they have one.

Each veteran is privately screened to assess readiness.
